Caring for Your Sleep Disorder

If you are suffering from a sleep disorder, it is very important that you receive the best possible care. Many physicians refer their patients to a sleep specialist. Sleep specialists have received specialized medical training in sleep and should be board certified in sleep medicine.

A comprehensive sleep medicine center will provide the following: (1) screening, (2) diagnosis, (3) treatment and (4) long-term support. A comprehensive sleep medicine center should have a PAP therapy program where you will be assigned a case manager to work closely with you and monitor your progress.

A sleep center should be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) or by The Joint Commission (formerly the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations – JCAHO). All physicians reading the sleep test results and overseeing your care should be either a Diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) or a Diplomat in Sleep Medicine of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Not all “sleep doctors” are board certified, so ASK!

If you are referred to a Sleep HealthCenters (www.sleephealth.com) location, you will work with a team of sleep specialists to create a treatment plan tailored to your needs, including behavioral therapy, respiratory therapy, and dental sleep medicine, if necessary.
